2018 Texas Relocation Network (TRN) Conference Takeaways

I recently attended TRN’s annual Texas Relocation Network Conference which was held in The Colony, Texas. More than 100 relocation professionals traveled to north Texas to hear about the latest trends in relocation, and to network with some of the best of the best in mobility. TRN did not disappoint as they provided a great keynote speaker to share perspective from a mortgage lens, corporate relocation panels, and speakers to inspire attendees during the conference. The theme this year was Partners in Progress: Collaboration, Motivation, and Innovation.

Here are a few of my takeaways to share with others:

Scott Eggen, EVP PrimeLending kicked off the conference sharing perspective on relocation in north Texas and surrounding states:

  • Current demand will carry new construction thru 2021
  • Lack of labor holding back new housing, and driving prices up.
  • Lumber is at its highest cost of all time.
  • Mortgage rates expected to increase up to 5% by 2020.

Corporate Panel led by Cartus, OEG, Aires, and Toyota discussed Group Moves:

  • Policy was created or modified for group move.
  • Bus tours can be very challenging due to delays.
  • Special needs children can be a challenge for family relocating.
  • Geographic area needs to be considered when helping family search for home.
  • Other factors include weather (Oklahoma) and property taxes (Houston)
  • Group move conversations should be started early with providers.

Bruce Waller, VP Armstrong Relocation and author of “Find Your Lane” presented “Find Your Lane: Change your GPS and Experience Success”

  • Maintain your vehicle by investing in yourself
  • Plan your road map through goal setting
  • Take the The Carpool Lane and expand your network

Corporate Panel led by Acosta, Shell, and American Heart Association

  • Chabot’s, Machine Learning, & Artificial intelligence leading the way for talent acquisition
  • Employment Branding is critical (Social media aggregation)
  • Sourcing strategy should include texting recruits
  • Permanent Solutions for temporary assignments makes a difference for Shell in West Tx
  • Its more than housing: Safety and dangerous roads can be a factor in rural areas

Petey Parker closed the conference with an inspiring presentation to encourage everyone to “Write Your Story”!

Use these 10 C’s when considering CHANGE in any organization!

Are you responsible for recruiting or mobility on your HR team? Do you feel like your on-boarding program continues to evolve when relocating talent or needs a refresh? If you say evolving, I say keep going! Unfortunately, the response I hear most often is… we really need a refresh. However, a refresh often requires an investment of time and energy during the assessment, then more time and energy “selling” to leadership. Sound familiar? This is why the majority of companies that need a refresh settle for the status quo.

This is similar to the time and energy it takes to recruit and develop talent in any organization as well… you just have to “C” (see) it from your (internal) customer lens. In other words, if you were relocating to a new city for a new role, are you doing everything you can to make it a great on-boarding experience for your team members or just using the “we’ve always done it that way” approach because you lack resources? Next time you sense a need to change or improve the experience for your teammates relocating, consider pulling in some of your stakeholders and use these 10 C’s below. Using a status quo approach could actually be costing you more “time and money” than you think.

  1. Be Committed to the development of the policy and partnership. This may take some time, but it is the heartbeat to any successful program.
  2. Be Consistent managing policy which may include “exceptions”. Tracking exceptions can be a game changer each year during the client review. Know whats driving these needs.
  3. Collaborate with all stakeholders this includes HR, Recruiters, Business Unit leaders, Vendors, Executives, etc… Be open to hearing other leadership perspectives.
  4. Continuously improve and evolve your program. Attend local relocation conferences as well as invest in WorldwideERC for an assortment of mobility resources.
  5. Have the Courage to BE BOLD and make adjustments during the process. Every relocation has different elements.
  6. Be an Champion of the program so other team members understand the on-boarding impact. Once you have established your program, meet with stakeholders to share success.
  7. Communication is key with all stakeholders even when you have bad news. Be proactive and push information rather than pulling.
  8. Change policy when needed. Sometimes there is no need to wait for an end of year review when a change is immediate.
  9. Challenge the status quo. Your employees and family relocating will appreciate this approach. Develop a passion for providing a great experience no matter the challenges.
  10. Have Compassion and empathy for family challenges along the way. All moves are not created equal. Family issues are one of the biggest reasons for a failing assignment.

…and most importantly, be Calm… Relocation can be stressful, especially when you are in reactive mode. However, it is minimized when you have a purposeful program. Everyone understands the process and is in alignment with expectations which leads to more positive outcomes for the team members and their family.

NTRP is Driving Relocation in North Texas with Purpose

Do you have Mobility responsibility in your organization? If so, you need to “plug in” and connect with the North Texas Relocation Professionals, a WorldwideERC chapter in North Texas! On Feb 7, NTRP kicked off 2018 with some great speakers to share information about relocating in North Texas with Purpose. Our members/guests asked some great questions during the meeting including questions about safety, capacity pricing, carry-on limits, and terminal parking. David did a wonderful job responding to each question including something we don’t think about when it comes to parking. He mentioned there will be enough parking, but we really don’t know if there will be as many people driving cars in next 6-8 years with carpooling playing a big transit role to and from airports. Parking space at terminal is still in review. Don’t miss this onboarding strategy to support talent acquisition in 2018!

November is a time to be thankful as we reflect on our achievements in 2017. It’s also business planning season which gives your team the opportunity to keep moving ahead in the same lane or make a lane change to achieve business goals and elevate employee experience in 2018.

One area often overlooked in the business planning process is the onboarding experience for employees and family relocating. Imagine coming to work on your first day not knowing where to park, or not having a computer login, or having no agenda or plan to onboard that day. It just might leave you with a sick feeling the company doesn’t care or value the importance of your arrival. 

What if the employee is relocating for the new job from another city? Oh my, this is where onboarding begins. Here is a question to think about as you plan for 2018…

Are you just giving your employees money to relocate? This message might be saying… we don’t really have time to procure companies to help you, so you are going to be on your own? Are you helping your employee with other ancillary services such new city tour, or helping the spouse with job search? There are so many ways to add value here…

It’s a competitive market and a great opportunity for your team to create a better experience by engaging in a partnership. There are several ways to help your employees from realtor support to sell their home, to finding temp housing, to moving their household goods, to providing house hunting trips and more with minimal costs depending on the level of comprehensive services.

Last month, I had the honor of serving on a corporate panel to share some ideas on career search and networking. It was exciting to see this company hosting a career networking event for employee’s spouses looking for employment. Now that says… WE CARE! I am sure it was minimal costs, just takes some time to plan.

So…….. What are you going to do to enhance the onboarding experience for your employees relocating in 2018? Here are 3 places to start…

  1. Start with a client review to confirm services available. Reach out to your partner and ask for a 30 minute meeting to discuss benchmarking and trends in the workplace.
  2. If you don’t have a partner, reach out to someone you know and ask for a referral. There is NO fee to have a partner coordinate the household goods moving and minimal fees for add’l relocation services.
  3. Try something NEW this year. Family issues are one of the biggest reasons why relocating assignments fail. It’s time to elevate and make 2018 the best year ever!

Call to Action: Reach out to someone you know in mobility and have some dialogue about enhancing services for your employees in 2018! They will be glad you did – and so will you!

Find your lane when onboarding talent that requires relocation.

Companies come in all shapes and sizes. There are large organizations with complex organizational structures to smaller companies that have only a few employees. One common thread is the need to achieve business goals which requires attracting talent. Many times the best talent can be found locally, but often requires mobility for a new candidate, an executive opening a new office, or even an employee in a developmental role.

When relocating employees, we have learned that different lanes will yield different experiences for the employee and family. There are basically three lanes to consider when managing a relocation for both US domestic and international. Each each lane has many  positives, but can also present potholes and the opportunity for detours to help make each relocation a better experience for the employee and family. Some employees don’t have the time or expertise to manage a lump sum relocation which creates challenges trying to get family transitioned,, while other employees are looking for a great experience, but the company doesn’t have the bench strength to manage the program and need a relo partner for support.

So which lane are you in?

  1. Lane 1 Lump Sum Relocation
    This lane is easy to manage/administer, but can be costly due to taxable income for companies when grossing up or to employee receiving non-taxable income. There is a  lump sum “plus” program that can be less costly and a detour to consider for best experience.
  2. Lane 2 In House Relocation program managed partnerships by HR staff.  Managing relocation takes expertise and bench strength, but can yield great results for the relocating employee working with partners they know and trust. The pothole to avoid is bidding moves during the summer peak season. Investing time identifying partners for the employee and family and using a distribution model will elevate the experience for everyone.
  3. Lane 3 Outsourcing / Partnering with Relocation Management Company. This is a great option when you have limited resources to manage and support executives with home sale purchase, as well as capturing expenses for tax reporting and more flexible. The key is to align with the RMC that best fits your program goals and culture.

Are you pursuing mobility excellence? 3 takeaways for your HR and Talent Acquisition teams!

Are you in HR or support talent with mobility needs? The North Texas Relocation Professionals (NTRP), a local relocation chapter in North Texas for WorldwideERC recently hosted a corporate panel meeting for members and guests to share “Pursuing Mobility Excellence from a Corporate Perspective”. NTRP members represent different relocation verticals in real estate, temporary housing, household goods moving, and HR managing mobility for different companies. This is an excellent organization to expand your education and mobility network! 

Our corporate panel was represented by companies with both US domestic and global mobility responsibilities including Sabre, Tenet Healthcare, BNSF Railway, and Dell. Some of the areas discussed during the meeting were: Policy Development and Review, Request for Proposals, and What keeps Corporate Mobility Professionals up at night.

Here are a few takeaways that might be relevant to your program:

  1. Bring facts and data to help corporate mobility professionals when you see an area to add value.
  2. Be brief and follow agenda for RFP’s!
  3. Relationships and collaboration are critical for great partnerships.

Others takeaways included:

  • Review policy often for exceptions
  • Collaborate with all of your stakeholders
  • Engage in partners that are “thinkers” and that understand process
  • Focus more on “cost to outcome” driven policies
  • Be transparent when challenges occur
  • Be brief on the RFP – adding footnotes when needed for pricing
  • Immigration and travel ban continue to keep us up at night

What would you add to this list for a great partnership?

I recently had the honor of speaking to a wonderful group of HR professionals in Dallas, Texas about maximizing the onboarding experience when relocating an employee. The employee relocation is often the first experience for a new employee and family with the new company which makes it critical to get off to a great start.

One of the points I always stress is the importance of developing a great partnership with your vendors. The right partnership can make a difference for the person managing the program and put them at ease which will also put the employee relocating at ease too. Investing in a great partnership basically says “we care” from the moment you made the decision to join our company. 

When the meeting was completed, I was asked to share some of the traits that make up a great partnership and wanted to share with you too. When engaging a vendor, it’s like a new date. It starts with being a good listener and learning what’s most important to each other to make the partnership effective. A partnership is a two way street and both parties need to be open minded, transparent, and committed to develop a great long term partnership

Some of the partnership traits that can make a difference include:

  1. Trust… is the foundation!
  2. Integrity… always do the right thing.
  3. Open communication… allows access when needed.
  4. Collaboration… working together when issues arise.
  5. Relationships… shows you care.
  6. Values… creates alignment for things that matter.
  7. Serve… each other in everything you do.
  8. Patience… when mistakes happen.
  9. Transparent… gives you the best chance to achieve goals.
  10. Purpose… its why we are here doing what we do!
