Use these 10 C’s when considering CHANGE in any organization!

Are you responsible for recruiting or mobility on your HR team? Do you feel like your on-boarding program continues to evolve when relocating talent or needs a refresh? If you say evolving, I say keep going! Unfortunately, the response I hear most often is… we really need a refresh. However, a refresh often requires an investment of time and energy during the assessment, then more time and energy “selling” to leadership. Sound familiar? This is why the majority of companies that need a refresh settle for the status quo.

This is similar to the time and energy it takes to recruit and develop talent in any organization as well… you just have to “C” (see) it from your (internal) customer lens. In other words, if you were relocating to a new city for a new role, are you doing everything you can to make it a great on-boarding experience for your team members or just using the “we’ve always done it that way” approach because you lack resources? Next time you sense a need to change or improve the experience for your teammates relocating, consider pulling in some of your stakeholders and use these 10 C’s below. Using a status quo approach could actually be costing you more “time and money” than you think.

  1. Be Committed to the development of the policy and partnership. This may take some time, but it is the heartbeat to any successful program.
  2. Be Consistent managing policy which may include “exceptions”. Tracking exceptions can be a game changer each year during the client review. Know whats driving these needs.
  3. Collaborate with all stakeholders this includes HR, Recruiters, Business Unit leaders, Vendors, Executives, etc… Be open to hearing other leadership perspectives.
  4. Continuously improve and evolve your program. Attend local relocation conferences as well as invest in WorldwideERC for an assortment of mobility resources.
  5. Have the Courage to BE BOLD and make adjustments during the process. Every relocation has different elements.
  6. Be an Champion of the program so other team members understand the on-boarding impact. Once you have established your program, meet with stakeholders to share success.
  7. Communication is key with all stakeholders even when you have bad news. Be proactive and push information rather than pulling.
  8. Change policy when needed. Sometimes there is no need to wait for an end of year review when a change is immediate.
  9. Challenge the status quo. Your employees and family relocating will appreciate this approach. Develop a passion for providing a great experience no matter the challenges.
  10. Have Compassion and empathy for family challenges along the way. All moves are not created equal. Family issues are one of the biggest reasons for a failing assignment.

…and most importantly, be Calm… Relocation can be stressful, especially when you are in reactive mode. However, it is minimized when you have a purposeful program. Everyone understands the process and is in alignment with expectations which leads to more positive outcomes for the team members and their family.

This strategy can help lift your team to achieve success in 2018!

As I continue sharing HR strategies to help you achieve your business goals in 2018, I came across a story from my book, “Find Your Lane” that just might illustrate the importance of accountability and lift your team members to success in 2018… Find your lane and drive your goals with purpose! 

“Hold Yourself Accountable to the Plan; De La Salle High School, in Concord, California, was recently featured in the movie When the Game Stands Tall, featuring head football coach Bob Ladouceur’s teams, which won 151 consecutive high school football games from 1992 to 2004—a winning streak that stands today.
One of my favorite parts of the movie (and most impacting) is how the team prepared for the season during practice. Each player wrote down his commitment for the week on a small index card and shared it with another player. The other player would say that he accepted the commitment and they’d shake hands. Talk about POWERFUL!
What if we all shared a commitment with our colleagues each week in business? It might be a commitment to getting reports in on time, returning all customer calls within a certain time period, or commitment to spending 30 minutes with a different employee each week to learn more about their story and how you might better support them.
When you prepare and hold each other accountable, you can accomplish things that you didn’t think would be possible. It may be preparing for a job interview, or a sales presentation, or teaching a class. When you plan, you have a compass to guide you along the way.” (Excerpt from Book; Find Your Lane)

Call to Action: Share your business plan with colleagues to get input for 2018. Ask someone to hold you accountable. You might even want your team members to complete a commitment card for one of your most important goals and share with a colleague or friend. It just might be what you need to achieve your goals!

Being an ambassador of culture will elevate your leadership and company growth!

I recently was asked to be a table host for an HR leadership event to discuss what it means to be an “ambassador of culture”. There was so much energy in the room and a real hunger for ideas about how elevate culture in everyone’s organization. As I️ reflected on some of the conversation it got me thinking about the importance of culture and how it is critical to every winning organization. It doesn’t matter which role you play, customer service, management, operations, human resources, sales, accounting, etc… We all have the choice to drive culture!

I️ was recently watching the ESPN 30 for 30 special on Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz. He took over as head coach in 1985 and led his team to a national championship four years later in 1988. He started by setting expectations, getting buy in, and recruiting the right players that aligned with his mission and values. Sounds like a winning business model, right?

When you look at championship teams, they all have one thing in common… a winning culture! Culture is “the ties that bind us”. It’s what we believe in at our workplace or in a volunteer organization. We can either have a winning culture, or an accepting culture. In both scenarios, the leaders of the enterprise actions are the key to which way the pendulum swings. Think about companies like Southwest Airlines, Chick-fil-A, and Apple. What do you see? Employees believe… They believe in the mission and values of the organization. They believe in the alignment with their own purpose and have empathy for others to drive outcomes! So what’s your culture like in your company? Let me share a few action items to consider for better outcomes as you develop your business planning strategy for success.

  1. Do you know the vision, mission and values or guiding principles of your enterprise? They are on our walls and all around us. Invest time to discuss them with other members on your team and why they are important in your workplace and for your clients.
  2. How can you tie your mission and guiding principles to the business needs for positive outcomes? In our business, it’s about building trust, reducing stress, and delivering reliability around the world for companies needing support when needing to relocate talent. How does your mission link to your business needs?
  3. How can you be an ambassador of your culture? Take some time to talk about your vision, vision, and values with other teammates and share what it means to you. Start driving conversation and decision making based your guiding principles. Find your lane and drive your workplace with purpose!

In his book “Hit Refresh”, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft shares the following excerpt… “any institution building comes from having a clear vision and culture that works to motivate progress both top down and bottom up.”

Did you hear that? From top / down leadership, and bottom / up leadership! We all have a choice to make a difference in our workplace.

What’s on your dashboard? Check your gauges for success in 2017!

If someone asked you which dashboard gauges on your auto were most important, you would probably say the speedometer and fuel. Right? Can you imagine driving your car without knowing how fast you were going, or how much gas you had in the tank? Many cars today include light indicators letting us know when we are getting low on fuel which reminds us it’s time to gas up if we want to go further. I remember running out of gas back in college when I thought I had close to 1/8 of the tank left. What about oil level and tire pressure? Thankfully our check engine light on the dashboard appears when there seems to be trouble ahead. These gauges are critical to helping us maintain the health of our vehicles so we can travel safely each day to reach our destination.

Do you have a dashboard to help you reach your workplace or personal goals? In relocation, we focus on many gauges such as on-time pickup and deliveries by our van operators, Survey accuracy for the moving estimate, and Quality scores for best customer experience to just name a few. I know recruiters that focus on time to fill job requisitions, HR leaders that focus on employee engagement, and Sales professionals focus on number of calls made each day. Knowing which gauges to focus on will increase your chances of success. When you have the right gauge on your dashboard, you can see when something is working, or when a process might not be working properly to give you a chance to stop and collaborate with others to fix it so you can continue. If you don’t have a gauge letting you know something is wrong or there are problems ahead, it could prevent you or your company from reaching your goals this year. brucetruck

The point is that it really doesn’t matter if you are in an entry level role, or in the senior executive leadership team, you need to be watching your key gauges to stay in alignment with your business and personal goals for improvement during the year.

Here 3 strategies to consider when listing your dashboard gauges:

  1. Keep it simple. Can you imagine the process of going through all of the gauges to fly an airplane? Many of us don’t have time or the patience to do this every day. Keeping it simple allows us to be more consistent each day.
  2. Identify your top 3. I write down a lot of goals each year that I want to accomplish. Then when I have completed my list, I then write down the top 3 that I want to stay focused on these gauges during the year to help keep me on track.
  3. Review dashboard on a regular basis. Once you determine the gauges, write them down and print them off. Have conversations with your teammates to get their perspective too

Now list your top 3… Print them out and review each week, month, quarter with your teammates and you will see significant impact at the end of the year. Taking action can change your career…

Have you ever wished you had a different schedule, or could take a vacation, or know you needed to make a change in your company policy but just haven’t made the time to take action?

Many people think and dream about a lot of things, but never take action because of various reasons. Why is this? Many times it is easy just accepting the way things are. In 2004, I was thinking about making a career change. I wasn’t really motivated in my current leadership position and was stuck wondering what I could do to experience more joy in my career. I was in a rut and wasn’t doing much about it other than thinking about how I wish things were different.brucetruck

My wife and I were attending church one Sunday morning when a man walked up on stage to give his personal testimony. This is the time when people will stand up to share their journey of faith. He shared a book he had been reading by John Ortberg called “If you want to walk on water, you’ve got to get out of the boat”. I remember thinking God was talking directly to me that Sunday morning. I reflected about this moment over the next couple of days and went to purchase the book to explore what this was all about. Life is full of defining moments and this was one of them. I immediately saw the payoff of taking action would be so much better than the current situation even if it was going to take time and effort. It was time to take action in my life.

So many times we accept the status quo because it is so much easier and painless to not do anything about it. Make a change takes time and effort. However, if we focus on the end result, taking action will be more motivating and fulfilling once you can achieve the results.

Is there something you wanted to achieve in 2016 that just didn’t get done because it was so much easier to not do anything? It’s a New Year and great time to put this on your list of action items. One way to create momentum is to start sharing with people close to you about why you want to make a change and get feedback. Accepting the status quo isn’t helping you or anyone around you. Make 2017 the year you decided to get out of the boat.

Call to action: What is one thing you need to change? Maybe its a new job, or changing a process to elevate the experience for you or others in your company. Write it down and take action over the next 90 days and include others on your journey. This is a great way to create momentum in your career or in your personal life!

This is a testimony to my personal leadership growth over the past 20 years. I continue to learn each day by connecting with some of the most talented people in business. In this series, I want to add value to your leadership growth by introducing you to leaders that make impact as they share challenges, successes, and perspectives on their journey as a business leader or in their personal life. So let’s get started…

Today, we are going to hear from Rufus Alexander with Tatum Insurance in Norman, Oklahoma. Rufus attended the University of Oklahoma where he played football for the Sooners from 2003-2006. He was an All American linebacker and received Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Big 12. Rufus was drafted in the NFL by the Minnesota Vikings in the 6th round and is now a business leader at Tatum Insurance. In the fall, you will also hear Rufus on the Oklahoma Sooners football radio broadcast sharing his perspectives on each game. I enjoyed meeting Rufus earlier this year attending a football game in Norman and immediately sensed his passion for people. He is authentic, approachable, and a great ambassador for the University.   1. Where did you grow up?

       Breaux Bridge, LA

  1. How did you get started in business/career?

       A friend of mine approached me and said I would be good at and I gave it a shot.

  1. Do you remember a challenge or life lesson that you had to overcome early in your football career which made you a better leader?

       I tore my ACL my freshman year in college. It taught me patience, dedication, and perseverance. It        also allowed me to see other guys lead the team, which I observed and took pointers.

  1. What was that moment when you knew that you had found your lane, your purpose in life?

       The moment I started enjoying what I was doing, it consume my mind, and heart every day. I                continue trying to perfect my craft.

  1. What is your most favorite achievement?

        Getting a scholarship and graduating from the University of Oklahoma

  1. Is there any one person that inspired or mentored you along the way?

       My high school Coach David Barham

  1. Do you have a saying or mantra that you live by?

       Effort needs no Talent

  1. What book are you reading or audio to help grow your leadership right now?

       The Motivation Manifesto By: Brendon Burchard

  1. Can you share any of your daily disciplines that help you stay focused as a leader?

       Working out, it keeps mentally and physically fit to attack every day.

  1. What advice would you give others to help them on their leadership journey?

        Listen and observe, before you lead. You can’t lead without knowing and understanding your               situation and people.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us, Rufus. Some of my takeaways include: When you encourage people, you can change their life. When you have a setback in life, you can learn a lot from observing others such as patience, dedication, and perseverance. When you find something you enjoy, focus on improving your craft each day. Everyone needs a mentor and some of the best mentors are your coaches in sports and in business. Effort needs no talent is a great mantra to live by. I love this! One of the most common threads I see in leaders today is to work on yourself each day which includes reading and focusing on your health and fitness. Finally, some great advice for others is to listen and observe, before you lead. You can’t lead without knowing and understanding your situation and people.

The GOAL is bigger than the ROLE!

When I was in high school, I always wanted to play quarterback. Our coach positioned me to play quarterback for our practice squad offense to help make the first string defense better. I knew the ultimate role for me personally was to play as the first string quarterback where I could throw that game winning touchdown and lead our team to victory, but our team also needed someone to run plays during practice to help make our primary defense better. The most important thing was for me to understand that the goal was team first, and not worry about which role I played as long as I was committed to helping our team succeed. cropped-bruce2013.jpg

It’s the same way in business, or possible in your community where there is a bigger outcome when the group pulls together and plays their role. Another word we often hear when talking about pursuing goals is collaboration. When the team pulls together, we are stronger and have a better chance of achieving big things. The people that inspire me the most are the ones that raise their hand and say I will help however you need me, not the person that says I will help as long as…

When moving an employee’s household goods, it takes several members on the team to deliver a successful relocation. It starts with the salesperson to surveyor to move coordinator to operations planners to driver/moving crews to accounting and finance to claims management. Everyone on the team has a unique role, but only one goal – to deliver a great moving experience for the customer!

What is your role in the organization and what can you do as a business leader or even a volunteer in your community to help advance achieving a goal? It may be assisting the salesperson with a new client, volunteering to help raise money for a charitable organization, or getting a community baseball field ready for the season opener.

Whatever it is, know that the goal is more important than the role to achieve team success. Just keep learning, and growing to be ready when your time comes for the next opportunity.
