3 strategies to include when planning your road map for success in 2018!

In February of 2004, I was ready to make a change in my career. I wanted to pursue a sales and marketing role, but knew that I had little experience and no clients to bring with me which might limit my chances of being hired. However, I had a plan that I shared during my interview which is what ultimately landed me the job. I explained how I was able to network with others to get an interview set up, then shared a written plan of the companies that I would be pursuing as potential clients and business partners. I also shared my personal growth plan too!  It doesn’t matter if you are an HR Manager, a mobility professional, or someone looking for a different role in the company, When you plan ahead, you are more effective and drive your career with purpose. 

As we begin the New Year, think about (and write them down) some of the important things that want to accomplish each day, each week, or each month. Share these goals with others in your circles, especially your supervisor so they know what you are working toward. Make sure you align your personal plan/goals with your company goals. Then review for alignment (and make changes when needed) throughout the year.

Here are a few ideas to help you plan for 2018!

  1. Set Goals: Invest one day to think about what’s important to you and write down 3 goals that are important to you. It might be leadership training, or how to elevate your mobility program, or something personal to help you become a better leader. In 2015, I wrote down that I wanted to publish a leadership book. I didn’t publish it until two years later, but was working toward the goal because I had written it down and reviewed often.
  2. Burn the Boats: 2017 ended last month… It’s a New Year!!! In my book, I share a story about a Spanish Army Leader that advised his guys to “burn their boats” once they had reached the island to take on warriors, so they would know there was no going back. Be committed to your goals and dreams even when things get tough. It may be a goal to learn something new while you are in your current role that will help you move to another role.
  3. Dream BIG: I once heard John Maxwell say “if it is your dream, no one can talk you into it, and no one can talk you out of it”. Whats your dream? Write a book, be the #1 sales producer, achieve an HR or Mobility certification, or even be a keynote speaker? Write it down, share with others, and review often. Be sure to include others on your journey to give you feedback and perspective along the way.

Call to Action: Set 3 important goals this week and hang them up in your office for review. Share them with 3 friends, post on social media. and send them to me too! I am confident you will hit them when using these strategies! Find your lane and make the most of your journey in 2018!

Member Spotlight with Armstrong Relocation

Mike Gonzales, President of Armstrong Relocation’s Dallas office, gives us an inside look at Armstrong Relocation, a moving company that is celebrating its 60th anniversary. 

Briefly tell us about your organization and its work in the Dallas Region.
Armstrong Relocation is a family business that was founded in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1957. We have been helping individuals and their families successfully relocate their household goods for more than 60 years. We work closely with our corporate clients in the Dallas Region, assisting them with relocation services for their employees, as well as with any office moving or warehousing needs that they may have.

What differentiates your company from others in your industry?
We like to start with our “why.” We pride ourselves in knowing why we enjoy helping our customers reach their next destination — by making that transition as easy for them as possible. We are here to hold their hands when they have questions and provide them with a seamless relocation by utilizing the largest moving fleet operated by any agent in the United States.

How long have you been a DRC member and why did you decide to join?
Our Dallas office opened in 1975, and we have been a DRC member for more than 30 years. We joined the DRC because we feel that every local corporate citizen has a responsibility to be part of an organization that helps to not only bring our region together, but also reach new heights by convincing companies to relocate here to become part of our vibrant metropolitan area.

What do you enjoy most about doing business in the Dallas Region?
I enjoy the Dallas (and Texas!) business-friendly, can-do attitude, which has helped our city and state become one of the most dynamic areas in the entire country.

How has your business changed over the past 60 years?
We have enjoyed tremendous success and expansion during the past six decades, having grown from a single location to currently operating in 29 cities from coast-to-coast. Additionally, we have become considerably more aggressive in seeking out written customer feedback, with the goal of continuously looking for ways to improve our performance. And like all successful companies, we have also changed with the times by applying the advances in technology to our business approach.

What do you hope for your company and the Dallas business community over the next 60 years?
I hope that our company and the Dallas business community both continue to grow in a positive way — by making this a place that everyone can be proud of and one that will maintain its current standing as a wonderful locale in which to raise a family and have a successful career.

Is there anything else you’d like to include about your company or its 60th anniversary celebration?
We look forward to continuing to grow and improve in this next decade and beyond, with the goal of being the premier relocation services company in the Dallas Region, the state of Texas, and the entire country.

Self Storage or Van Line Storage? 4 things to know!

One of the exciting things about a great economy is a robust housing market and being able to sell your home quickly. We are seeing this across several US markets. Sometimes, it’s so quick that you don’t have a new home to move into, which may require you to place move your personal household goods into short term storage until you can close on your new home.

Many times an employee relocation will include short-term storage with the van line while the employee searches for a new home. However, there are times when the family will be responsible for storage costs because the storage is not included in relocation policy, or the company may have provided a lump sum for the employee relocation which leads to a question I hear many times during the year: Should we use van line storage, or find a self-storage unit to minimize costs?

When helping families relocate, I often share the information below to help customers make an informed decision on this important topic. Consider these 4 points next time you or someone you know is moving into storage.

  1. Estimated Cost… A visual survey provided by the van line surveyor can help determine not only the estimated cost for the van line storage, but will also provide you with the information needed to determine self-storage unit size which is needed to compare costs. If the storage unit doesn’t have trailer access, there may be additional fees for smaller truck to “shuttle” for unloading too.
  2. Valuation Coverage… if you decide to use personal storage, be sure and check all items as they are unloaded into the storage unit for damage. When using van line storage, items are checked in / out storage for continuous coverage. Items placed in personal storage are typically not covered once unloaded.
  3. Protection… If customer decides to use personal storage, be sure to have plenty of blankets on hand to protect furniture items when unloaded. When items are placed in van line storage, blankets are provided for protection to minimize any damage while in storage.
  4. Access… When household goods are placed in van line storage, they are “vaulted” (loaded in a secure wooden box) for security, which doesn’t provide immediate access customer. You will need to call in and schedule appointment 24-48 hours so staff can locate your vaults for access. The advantage is minimal handling to prevent damage during storage to delivery.

Depending on where items are being stored, storage costs will vary from city to city. So be sure to look at all variables to make the best decision for your family. Many times, the van line storage will provide more advantages, as well as make it easier to coordinate the delivery when the new home at destination is ready!

Don’t miss this onboarding strategy to support talent acquisition in 2018!

November is a time to be thankful as we reflect on our achievements in 2017. It’s also business planning season which gives your team the opportunity to keep moving ahead in the same lane or make a lane change to achieve business goals and elevate employee experience in 2018.

One area often overlooked in the business planning process is the onboarding experience for employees and family relocating. Imagine coming to work on your first day not knowing where to park, or not having a computer login, or having no agenda or plan to onboard that day. It just might leave you with a sick feeling the company doesn’t care or value the importance of your arrival. 

What if the employee is relocating for the new job from another city? Oh my, this is where onboarding begins. Here is a question to think about as you plan for 2018…

Are you just giving your employees money to relocate? This message might be saying… we don’t really have time to procure companies to help you, so you are going to be on your own? Are you helping your employee with other ancillary services such new city tour, or helping the spouse with job search? There are so many ways to add value here…

It’s a competitive market and a great opportunity for your team to create a better experience by engaging in a partnership. There are several ways to help your employees from realtor support to sell their home, to finding temp housing, to moving their household goods, to providing house hunting trips and more with minimal costs depending on the level of comprehensive services.

Last month, I had the honor of serving on a corporate panel to share some ideas on career search and networking. It was exciting to see this company hosting a career networking event for employee’s spouses looking for employment. Now that says… WE CARE! I am sure it was minimal costs, just takes some time to plan.

So…….. What are you going to do to enhance the onboarding experience for your employees relocating in 2018? Here are 3 places to start…

  1. Start with a client review to confirm services available. Reach out to your partner and ask for a 30 minute meeting to discuss benchmarking and trends in the workplace.
  2. If you don’t have a partner, reach out to someone you know and ask for a referral. There is NO fee to have a partner coordinate the household goods moving and minimal fees for add’l relocation services.
  3. Try something NEW this year. Family issues are one of the biggest reasons why relocating assignments fail. It’s time to elevate and make 2018 the best year ever!

3 Takeaways from WorldwideERC Global Workforce Symposium 2017!

The last week of September, I enjoyed the opportunity to spend 4 days in the city of Chicago attending WorldwideERC’s Global Workforce Symposium annual conference. The week started with partner meetings and the opening of the marketplace where exhibitors get to share their latest products and services. I always enjoy attending the marketplace because it is a great opportunity to not only learn about new services, but a chance to meet up with past friends and meet new ones too while having great conversation around the industry we enjoy called RELOCATION. 

Anytime I attend a conference, I always try to achieve 2 objectives. The first objective is to expand my network. This takes time and courage to step out and say hello to someone you don’t really know, but want to connect with because of the common thread of relocation. Your network will allow you to be more resourceful and give you another channel to verify and validate throughout the process of helping clients and business partners.

The second objective is to learn something new to apply for myself, or someone I know. This takes investing time to attend the educational sessions offered during the conference. I really enjoy the sessions that share trendsetters, and things to be watching for in the industry.

Today, I want to share 3 conference takeaways that you might be interested in learning about as well.

  1. Technology continues to enhance our industry. I enjoyed the sessions “Has Technology replaced service” which was quite fascinating hearing from a panel of experts. Some of the technologies discussed included email picture signatures, video surveys, 24/7 platforms, gaining efficiencies, generational differences, AI, Augmented Reality, and security. Another interesting note was the idea of hiring talent with technology experience and training the relocation skills.
  2. Duty of Care continues to be a hot topic especially during a time of natural disasters. This is the importance of Risk and Compliance obligation. What are we doing as corporations, and supply chain to engage in the process? Interesting note that 80% of ee think the company has a legal obligation, while 46% of companies actually have a policy. Some of the other notes in this area included the temp housing security such as air B&B. Be on the lookout for continued conversation around this topic.
  3. Lastly, BE BOLD! We all enjoyed hearing from an expert corporate panel facilitated by Peggy Smith, President and CEO of WorldwideERC. Peggy helped drive some real conversation around the topic of being bold… from corporate leaders to partners. Imagine the possibility of corporations including their partners for onboarding just like their new employee population. Imagine the possibility of driving business strategy in the mobility space. Maybe it’s time for us to “hit refresh” and be bold to start the next conversation.

Bonus was hearing from Mitch Joel. He shared some much about disruption, transformation, and innovation. But the takeaway for me was around marketing and the 3 components needed for success. These included Image, Mobile First, and the important of being social.

Find your lane when onboarding talent that requires relocation.

Companies come in all shapes and sizes. There are large organizations with complex organizational structures to smaller companies that have only a few employees. One common thread is the need to achieve business goals which requires attracting talent. Many times the best talent can be found locally, but often requires mobility for a new candidate, an executive opening a new office, or even an employee in a developmental role.

When relocating employees, we have learned that different lanes will yield different experiences for the employee and family. There are basically three lanes to consider when managing a relocation for both US domestic and international. Each each lane has many  positives, but can also present potholes and the opportunity for detours to help make each relocation a better experience for the employee and family. Some employees don’t have the time or expertise to manage a lump sum relocation which creates challenges trying to get family transitioned,, while other employees are looking for a great experience, but the company doesn’t have the bench strength to manage the program and need a relo partner for support.

So which lane are you in?

  1. Lane 1 Lump Sum Relocation
    This lane is easy to manage/administer, but can be costly due to taxable income for companies when grossing up or to employee receiving non-taxable income. There is a  lump sum “plus” program that can be less costly and a detour to consider for best experience.
  2. Lane 2 In House Relocation program managed partnerships by HR staff.  Managing relocation takes expertise and bench strength, but can yield great results for the relocating employee working with partners they know and trust. The pothole to avoid is bidding moves during the summer peak season. Investing time identifying partners for the employee and family and using a distribution model will elevate the experience for everyone.
  3. Lane 3 Outsourcing / Partnering with Relocation Management Company. This is a great option when you have limited resources to manage and support executives with home sale purchase, as well as capturing expenses for tax reporting and more flexible. The key is to align with the RMC that best fits your program goals and culture.

Cost alignment is key, but this component is just as important when relocating talent!

Over the last few years, we have heard about the importance of cost alignment from companies when relocating their employees. Many companies base their policy on a cost budget approach when relocating talent. However, the talent management shortage has also played a vital role lately for companies wanting to be competitive when hiring talent that requires a relocation.

Today, companies expect another component when relocating talent known as “the experience”. The employee experience is about employee engagement from the time an employee connects with the provider for their relocation. I recently heard one of our leaders share a poll that stated 80% of companies think they are providing superior service when look through their eyes, and only 8% of the customers think they are receiving superior service. Wow, that is a 72% difference! Delivering an experience starts with understanding the needs of the customer. 

So what experiences are customers looking for?

Customers have different needs. Some are looking for a specific moving dates, or budget options to consider when selecting services. Some like the new virtual survey concept because it is convenient, while others don’t feel like it is safe or as accurate as a visual survey. Some customers just want a warm smile and trust in their moving coordinator and driver. Whatever the case may be, the key to providing a great experience always starts with asking questions to determine expectations. If customer has needs that are not aligned with services, then they will most likely not have a great experience. However, if you can identify what’s important, and build a plan around their answer, then you just might deliver the experience they are looking for and create a customer for life!
